Measuring & Monitoring Device Calibration

ISO 9001:2015 Clause 7.1.5 · ISO 45001:2018 Clause 7.1 — Monitoring and measuring resources, traceability of measurement

Procedure overview
A M Water Services maintains calibration control over all measuring and monitoring devices used to confirm compliance of work or product to specification — including pressure-test rigs, leak-detection equipment, atmospheric monitors used in confined-space entry, and any tooling whose accuracy affects acceptance of completed work. New devices are added to the Calibration & Equipment Maintenance Log on procurement; calibration is performed by an accredited external calibration body and a certificate traceable to national standards is held against each device. Re-check frequency is set on a usage and criticality basis. Equipment failing calibration is removed from use, quarantined, and any work performed using that equipment since the previous successful calibration is reviewed for the validity of results. Control extends to hired equipment as well as company-owned. Records are retained per SOP 4.7.

Identify & Schedule
Determine whether a measuring or monitoring device is used to confirm compliance of work or product
Calibration required?
No
Use device under normal control — no calibration cycle
Yes
Select equipment capable of the precision and accuracy required
Add new device to the Calibration & Equipment Maintenance Log; establish re-check frequency on usage and criticality basis
Calibration & Equipment Maintenance Log
Send equipment to accredited calibration body for calibration
External Calibration Body
UKAS / equivalent accredited provider
Calibrate
Determine most suitable method of calibration
Carry out calibration of equipment and issue certificate (description, serial, traceability to national standards, accuracy, calibration date)
Return calibrated equipment and certificate to AMWS

Issue, Use & Quarantine
Issue calibrated equipment plus certificate to operative for the work activity
Use device for intended purpose only; store in suitable protective environment when not in use; maintain identification (serial / asset number)
Damaged or failed calibration check?
No
Continue use until next scheduled calibration
Yes
Quarantine on site; remove from use; report to Site Supervisor
Review work performed using the failed device since the previous successful calibration; treat suspect results as non-conforming pending re-check
Repair, recalibrate, or dispose of failed device

Failed-calibration retrospective review — mandatory
When a device fails its calibration check or is found damaged in use, the Site Supervisor must: (1) immediately remove the device from service and place it in a clearly-marked quarantine area; (2) identify all work performed using that device since the previous successful calibration; (3) review whether the results obtained could have been affected by the failure; (4) treat any potentially-affected work as non-conforming pending re-test or re-measurement; (5) record the failure and the retrospective review in the Calibration & Equipment Maintenance Log. This control extends to hired-in equipment — check the calibration certificate on receipt and on return.
