First Aid

ISO 45001:2018 Clause 8.2 · Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 — First aid arrangements at work

Procedure overview
A M Water Services determines the number of trained first aiders, the level of training required, and the first aid equipment provided through a First Aid Risk Assessment that considers the activities, the workforce, the work locations and the access to emergency services. As a water-infrastructure contractor working in the highway, on remote sites and occasionally in lone-working situations, AMWS holds first-aid provision above the regulatory minimum: at least one trained First Aider per active work crew. The HSQE Consultant identifies the number required; the Site Supervisor ensures qualified first aiders are present; first aid kits are stocked, identified and inspected monthly; and all accidents and injuries are reported per SOP 8.1. New starters are briefed on first-aid arrangements at induction and first-aider names are posted on every site / vehicle. Records are retained per SOP 4.7.

First aider ratios — Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981
First-aid provision is determined by the workplace risk profile and number of employees. Construction and water-infrastructure work in the highway is treated as medium-to-high risk under HSE guidance.
Workplace riskNumber of employeesMinimum first aid provisionMental health first aiders
Low risk (e.g. office)< 251 Appointed PersonConsider similar ratio
25 – 501 EFAW (Emergency First Aid at Work)Consider similar ratio
> 501 EFAW per 100 employeesConsider similar ratio
Medium-to-high risk (water-infrastructure work, highway, excavation, confined space)< 51 Appointed PersonConsider similar ratio
5 – 50At least 1 EFAW or FAW (First Aid at Work)Consider similar ratio
> 501 FAW per 50 employeesConsider similar ratio
Definitions: EFAW — Emergency First Aid at Work, 1-day course, valid 3 years. FAW — First Aid at Work, 3-day course, valid 3 years (re-qualification 2-day refresher). Appointed Person — not a first aider; takes charge of arrangements (calling emergency services, looking after kit) but does not deliver clinical first aid. Annual refresher training is recommended by HSE for all qualified first aiders. Mental health first aiders are not legally mandated but are recommended; AMWS aims for parity with physical first-aider numbers as wellbeing grows in importance under ISO 45001 ยง6.1.2.1. Operational rule: AMWS holds first-aid provision above the minimum — at least one trained First Aider per active work crew, regardless of crew size, given that crews work in the highway, in remote locations and occasionally with lone working.
