HSE Construction Campaign

Surprise inspections starting October 17th: - 12 inspectors deployed - Focus: Asbestos, MSDs, noise, dust - Part of 14,000 nationwide inspections

Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs):

  • 53% of construction health conditions
  • Focus on manual handling
  • Pipe laying high-risk activity

EA Incident Clarification

Environment Agency confirms: - EA determines final incident categorization - Water companies cannot influence ratings - £189 million funding boost - On track for 10,000 inspections

Fatal Incident: Retaining Wall Collapse

H. Mealing & Sons fined £56,775: - 1.8m wall collapsed - No written design or planning - Worker fatally crushed

Lesson: All temporary structures need proper design - relevant for reservoir and tank work

Fall from Height Prosecution

Worker died from 6-foot fall: - Unguarded scaffolding platform - Serious head injuries proved fatal

Reminder: ALL platforms need guarding regardless of height
