Closes CAR-2026-010

CAR-2026-010, raised at IA202615 Legal Compliance against Clauses 7.4 and 6.1.3, called for three visual one-page compliance summaries for the notice board. The three below are the deliverable.

The finding was that AMWS's legal register is thorough but is not seen outside the Directors and the HSQE Consultant. These summaries put the parts that govern how an operative works on the wall.

Printing: each summary is a single page. Print from the browser at 100%, one per sheet, and laminate. Replace at each annual review or whenever the content changes.

1 · What the law expects of you on site

A M Water Services Ltd — Health & Safety

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, section 7, every worker must:

  1. Take reasonable care of your own health and safety, and of anyone affected by what you do
  2. Co-operate with AMWS on anything needed to meet a legal duty
  3. Not interfere with or misuse anything provided for safety: guards, barriers, PPE, signage

These are duties on you personally, not just on the company.

Before work starts

  • RAMS signed. If you have not read and signed the method statement and risk assessment for this job, you are not ready to start
  • PPE on and fit for the task. Reject damaged or worn kit and get it replaced
  • Services located. CAT scan and permit before any excavation. See POL_HSQE_06
  • Permit issued where the job needs one: excavation, hot work, confined space

Stop work

Anyone can stop work they believe is unsafe. Operative, subcontractor, visitor. There is no consequence for stopping a job, and there is no expectation that you finish something you think is dangerous. Tell the Site Supervisor and it gets sorted.

If something happens

Situation Do this
Injury Make it safe · first aid · call 999 if serious · tell the Supervisor the same day
Near miss Report it. Nothing happens to you for reporting one. Catching it before it becomes an injury is the reason for reporting
Dangerous condition Stop, make it safe if you can do so safely, report it

Reportable injuries, over-7-day absences and dangerous occurrences must reach the HSE under RIDDOR.

2 · Environment — the three that get us prosecuted

A M Water Services Ltd — Environmental

Most environmental law is background. Three things on AMWS work can put the company in front of a regulator.

1 · Fuel and oil spills

The most likely incident on AMWS work. Diesel, hydraulic oil, engine oil.

  • Spill kit in every vehicle and at the yard. Check it weekly and know where it is before you need it
  • Protect the drain first. A litre of diesel in a surface drain is a pollution incident; the same litre on the ground usually is not
  • Contain, absorb, bag the waste, tell the Supervisor

2 · Chlorinated water

Disinfection water reaching a watercourse or surface drain is an EPR-notifiable event and our water company clients treat it seriously.

  • Dechlorinate before discharge. Every time
  • Follow MS 3.6 and SOP 9.3, with no shortcuts because the job is running late
  • If in doubt, hold it and ask

3 · Waste duty of care

Every load of waste we move must go to a licensed carrier with a waste transfer note that is complete and kept.

  • Segregate on site. It is cheaper than sorting it later and it is how AMWS hits the 80% diversion target
  • Hazardous waste is separate and stays separate (SOP 9.5)
  • No transfer note, no movement

If it goes wrong

  1. Contain it. Stop the source, protect the drain
  2. Tell the Site Supervisor immediately, not at the end of the shift
  3. The Directors decide on regulator notification
  4. Environment Agency incident hotline: 0800 80 70 60

Reporting an environmental incident quickly affects how the regulator responds. Never hide one.

3 · Speak up

A M Water Services Ltd — Raising concerns and looking after each other

Near misses

Report them. A near miss is the injury that did not happen this time.

Nothing happens to the person who reports one. AMWS would rather hear about a near miss than not hear about it.

If something is wrong at work

Concern Who to go to
Day-to-day work problem Site Supervisor — Jason May
Grievance Leanne Mason (POL_HSQE_15)
Bullying or harassment Either Director (POL_HSQE_05)
Something serious you do not want to raise openly Whistleblowing — POL_HSQE_27, legally protected

Harassment — what changed

AMWS has a legal duty to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment at work, including harassment by customers, contractors and members of the public, not only by colleagues.

From 30 October 2026 that duty strengthens to "all reasonable steps", and extends to harassment on other protected grounds.

In practice: if it happens, tell a Director. It gets dealt with. Nobody is expected to absorb it as part of the job.

Mental health

Two trained Mental Health First Aiders at AMWS:

  • Jason May, Site Supervisor
  • Leanne Mason, Director

Either can be approached confidentially, in person or by phone. Their job is to listen and point you at the right support, not to report back.

Need Route
Someone to talk to at work Jason May or Leanne Mason (MHFA)
Crisis, any hour Samaritans 116 123 — free, 24/7
Ongoing support Your GP, or self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies online
Immediate danger to life 999

Time off for a mental health appointment is treated exactly like any other medical appointment.

Fatigue

Long days, driving, call-outs and overnights add up. If you are too tired to work or drive safely, say so. That is a legitimate reason to stop, and POL_HSQE_31 covers it.
